Packers announce coaching staff changes

The Green Bay Packers have hired DeMarcus Covington as defensive line/run game coordinator, Luke Getsy as senior assistant, Cory Harkey as special teams quality control coach, Jeremiah Kolone (ka-low-nay) as offensive assistant (minority fellowship), Jeff Koonz as defensive assistant and Jamael Lett (pronounced Jamal) as a defensive quality control coach, promoted Sean Duggan (DUG-an) to linebackers coach and Sean Mannion to quarterbacks coach and moved Connor Lewis to pass game specialist/game management. Head Coach Matt LaFleur made the announcements on Thursday.

Covington enters his ninth NFL season and first with the Packers after working for the New England Patriots for the past eight seasons. He worked in multiple roles for the Patriots in his time there, first as a coaching assistant in 2017-18, then outside linebackers coach in 2019, followed by defensive line coach from 2020-23 and then defensive coordinator last season. While Covington was a position coach and defensive coordinator from 2019-24, New England ranked in the top five in the NFL in total defense (No. 3, 317.9 ypg), passing defense (No. 3, 204.4 ypg), yards allowed per play (No. 2, 5.1), first downs allowed per game (No. 2, 18.8), interceptions (No. 2, 102), interception percentage (No. 2, 3.1) and third-down defense (No. 2, 37.0 pct.). Prior to his time in the NFL, the former Samford University wide receiver was a graduate assistant at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (2012) and Ole Miss (2013-14), coached the defensive line at the University of Tennessee-Martin (2015) and was the co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach at Eastern Illinois (2016).

Getsy returns to the Packers in a coaching role after being a consultant for Green Bay for part of last season. He originally joined the Packers as an offensive quality control coach (2014-15) and would go on to coach wide receivers (2016-17) and quarterbacks (2019-21), and added passing game coordinator (2020-21) to his positional duties. In his time between stints with Green Bay, Getsy was the offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach for Mississippi State (2018) and the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears (2022-23) and Las Vegas Raiders (2024). Prior to his first stint with the Packers, he coached on the collegiate level for seven seasons (2007-13). After his playing career at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Akron, Getsy was a graduate assistant for the Zips (2007-08). In 2009, he was the offensive coordinator at West Virginia Wesleyan. Getsy returned to Pitt to serve as an offensive graduate assistant in 2010. From 2011-12, he was the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and in 2013, Getsy was the wide receivers coach at Western Michigan.

Harkey comes to the Packers after working as the assistant special teams coach for the Buffalo Bills for the past three seasons (2022-24). Prior to his time in the NFL, he worked as the tight ends/special teams coordinator at Tennessee State (2021) and was the tight ends coach at Azusa Pacific (2019-20). Harkey played in the NFL from 2012-16, appearing in 64 games with 28 starts for the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams after originally entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of UCLA.

Kolone joins the Packers after a short time as an offensive analyst at the University of Central Florida (2025) and a season as an offensive graduate assistant at the University of Arizona (2024). As a player, the former offensive lineman was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of San Jose State by the Los Angeles Rams in 2018. Kolone spent time on the Rams' practice squad and active roster (2018-22), appearing in five games with two starts in 2022.

Koonz comes to Green Bay after a long collegiate coaching career, including the past five seasons (2020-24) at West Virginia University as the special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach. He also worked as the defensive coordinator for the Mountaineers for the last part of the 2024 season. Koonz came to West Virginia after serving as the inside linebackers coach at Ole Miss for the 2019 season. Prior to that, he spent two years coaching the linebackers at North Texas (2017-18), adding co-defensive coordinator duties for the 2018 season. Koonz spent the previous three years at Cincinnati, coaching the safeties in 2014 and the linebackers in 2015-16. The Wallkill, New York, native also coached in college at Louisiana Tech (2010-13), Texas (2009 and 2005-06), Iowa State (2007-08) and Auburn (2004).

Lett comes to the Packers after working as a defensive coaching assistant for the New England Patriots last season, his first year in the NFL. In 2023, he was a special teams analyst at the University of North Carolina and from 2021-22 he worked as special teams coordinator/defensive assistant at South Alabama. Lett coached the secondary at Akron in 2020 and at his alma mater, Samford, from 2017-19. He also coached collegiately at Ohio University as a graduate assistant in 2016 and as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee-Martin in 2015. Lett got his start in coaching with Brainerd High School (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in 2013, serving as defensive coordinator while teaching math at the school. He then coached defensive backs at Davidson High School (Mobile, Ala.) in 2014.

Duggan gets promoted in his second season with Green Bay after working as a defensive assistant for the Packers last year. He came to Green Bay after spending the previous four years at his alma mater, Boston College, first as linebackers coach (2020-22) before adding co-defensive coordinator to his duties in 2023. Prior to his time coaching at Boston College, Duggan was a defensive graduate assistant at Ohio State (2019) and coached linebackers at UMass (2018) and at the University of Hawaii (2016-17). He began his coaching career as a defensive graduate assistant at Boston College. As a player at BC, Duggan appeared in 45 career games and was a captain in 2014.

Mannion gets promoted after working as an offensive assistant for the Packers last season. He played quarterback in the NFL for nine seasons (2015-23) after originally being selected in the third round (No. 89 overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams. After four seasons with the Rams (2015-18), he played for the Minnesota Vikings (2019-23) and Seattle Seahawks (2023). Overall, he saw action in 14 games with three starts in his pro career. In college, Mannion made 43 starts at Oregon State, completing 1,187 of 1,838 passes (64.6 pct.) for 13,600 yards and 83 touchdowns. The two-time honorable mention All-Pacific-12 selection (2013-14) set school records for career passing TDs and completion percentage while ranking No. 2 in conference history in passing yards. In 2013, Mannion was tied for No. 4 in the nation in passing TDs (37) and ranked No. 2 in the country with 4,662 yards, a Pac-12 record.
