GREEN BAY – The Packers hung on for a 20-12 victory over the Raiders on Thursday night at Lambeau Field, improving to 2-0 in the preseason.
Here's the quarter-by-quarter recap:
4th Quarter
Early in the fourth quarter, the Raiders threatened for the first time in a while, as QB Connor Cook fired a 33-yard pass to WR Seth Roberts to convert on third down and get into the red zone.
The Packers' defense held there, though, and K Giorgio Tavecchio made a 28-yard field goal to pull the Raiders within 17-6.
Packers CB Josh Hawkins turned away another Oakland drive with an interception on a Cook pass intended for WR K.J. Brent. Hawkins' long return included a facemask penalty and put the Packers at the Oakland 15.
QB Marquise Williams entered for the Packers at this point, with 8:12 remaining, but he was sacked on third down, and K Mason Crosby tacked on a field goal to make it 20-6.
The Raiders then pulled within one score when Brynden Trawick blocked Tim Masthay's punt, and Nate Allen recovered it in the end zone for an Oakland TD. Tavecchio's extra point hit the left upright, though, so the score was 20-12 with 3:01 left.
The Packers ran out the clock from there.
Green Bay now has two preseason games remaining, both on the road – at San Francisco and at Kansas City.
3rd Quarter
A 10-point third quarter stretched the Packers' lead over the Raiders to 17-3 with one quarter to go on Thursday night at Lambeau Field.
The Packers' defense began the second half with a three-and-out, and the offense got moving right away. QB Joe Callahan scrambled for 9 yards to convert on third-and-6, and then he found rookie WR Geronimo Allison for 18 yards over the middle.
Allison then drew a pass interference penalty on the Raiders for another first down, and Callahan neatly scrambled out of trouble and found RB John Crockett for 12 yards to the Oakland 23. Another scrambling completion, this one to TE Kennard Backman, gained 8 yards and made it first-and-goal on the 10. Crockett ran it in from there for a TD to make it 14-3.
The Packers' defense remained stingy, as S Kentrell Brice chased down a short pass for a 1-yard loss, and S Jermaine Whitehead broke up a throw on third down. WR Trevor Davis ran up and caught a low, short punt, returning it 21 yards into Oakland territory.
It didn't take long for the Packers to reach scoring territory. An 11-yard screen pass to Crockett converted on third-and-6 to get to the 29, and two Callahan runs set up third-and-1 from the 20. RB Brandon Burks made a nice cutback to gain 15 yards, setting up first-and-goal from the 5, but the drive stalled there on a third-down sack.
K Mason Crosby was good from 26 yards out, and the Packers led, 17-3, with 1:56 left in the quarter.
2nd Quarter
A scoreless second quarter sent the Packers into the locker room with a 7-3 lead at halftime of Thursday night's preseason game against the Raiders at Lambeau Field.
The Packers got the ball back early in the second quarter after the defense forced a three-and-out. S Chris Banjo broke up a pass over the middle and LB Jayrone Elliott snuffed out a screen pass on third-and-long.
Green Bay passed on a potential field goal after a 24-yard run by RB James Starks and a 31-yard pass from Hundley to WR Davante Adams got the offense across midfield. Hundley limped off, appearing to re-injure his bad ankle, and QB Joe Callahan took over. But on fourth-and-1 from the Oakland 25, Callahan didn't see an open man along the sideline soon enough and the Packers turned it over on downs.
The Packers got it right back, after CB Damarious Randall picked off a deep ball from QB Derek Carr intended for WR Amari Cooper. But Green Bay did nothing with the turnover, and P Tim Masthay boomed a high, 51-yard punt to put the Raiders back on their own 17.
A holding penalty on the Raiders helped stall their next drive, and Callahan took over on his own 35 with 2:38 left in the half. All-Pro pass rusher Khalil Mack wrecked things quickly, though, by getting a sack and forcing an intentional grounding penalty, leaving rookie P Peter Mortell to punt from deep in Green Bay territory.
Mortell came though, booming a 58-yarder to get the Packers out of a hole, and the defense got a three-and-out.
Callahan got one more shot in the half, beginning from his own 31-yard line after the Raiders were flagged for interfering with WR Jared Abbrederis' fair catch on the punt. The Raiders' defense forced another three-and-out, though, and that wrapped up the half.
1st Quarter
The Packers scored first and took a 7-3 lead over the Raiders after one quarter of Thursday night's preseason game at Lambeau Field.
The Packers got into scoring territory quickly on the game's opening drive. QB Brett Hundley hit FB Aaron Ripkowski for a 13-yard gain on the first play, and RB Eddie Lacy followed two snaps later with a 20-yard run.
After Lacy gained 19 more on four carries, Hundley hit WR Davante Adams for a 6-yard gain to convert on third-and-5 and get the Packers into the red zone. A 10-yard slant pass to TE Jared Cook made it first-and-goal, and Lacy needed three more carries to finish off the final 6 yards for the TD. Lacy had nine carries for 45 yards on the drive, which consumed 14 plays and 7 minutes, 36 seconds.
The Raiders answered with a field goal. A personal foul on Packers DE Datone Jones gave the Raiders their initial first down, and then a 20-yard pass from QB Derek Carr to WR Amari Cooper converted on third-and-11. K Sebastian Janikowski was good from 46 yards out to make it 7-3 with 2:43 left in the quarter.
The Packers went three-and-out on their second drive.
