The Green Bay Packers joined forces with the American Red Cross Friday, Nov. 19, for fans to engage in a friendly competition with their ultimate rival, the Minnesota Vikings fans. And while the end result – collecting as many blood donations to support patients in need – was the main goal, participating donors used the competition against the Vikings for a bit of morale.

The one-day competition was not limited to Lambeau Field. In fact, fans throughout the entire state were involved. For all blood donations made through the American Red Cross Friday, those donations will count toward the final tally for the Green Bay Packers. And come Sunday, the team that has the highest number of people turnout to donate will get the chance to earn extra bragging rights on the field.

Heading the competition at Lambeau Field was Sarah Barman, and only a few hours into the competition, she was pleased with the results.

"This is the first year we have done the Green Bay Packers-Minnesota Vikings challenge," Barman said. "So far, we have seen great results. We already have had 145 donors, and we still have three hours left to go.

"This morning, we actually had to tell people to come back later in the day because we had so many individuals willing to donate. Thankfully, everyone has been very understanding and patient."

The competition brought forth residents of the community as well as Lambeau Field employees in hopes of earning those extra bragging rights over the Vikings.

"With the Green Bay Packers – Minnesota Vikings game this weekend, it seemed only fitting to have this challenge between the two states," Barman said. "And it is great that all donations made throughout the state will be included in our final count. All those participating in Friday's competition were given a Green Bay Packers pin and a Red Cross travel mug, along with a chance to win special Green Bay Packers merchandise.
