The Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Inc. today announced that Clay Matthews will be honored with the Hall's 'Most Valuable Player' award at the 43rd Packers Hall of Fame Induction Banquet, to be held the evening of July 20, 2013, in the Lambeau Field Atrium. Former players Chris Jacke and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, and contributor Emil Fischer will become the newest members of the Hall that evening.
Matthews authored another outstanding season in 2012, leading the team as one of the NFL's most dynamic, impactful and versatile defenders. Wreaking havoc on opposing offenses, he became the first player in franchise history to earn Pro Bowl recognition in each of his first four seasons in the league. Matthews flourished in his transition back to right outside linebacker and played in 12 games, posting 60 tackles (45 solo), including 13 sacks, four passes defensed and a forced fumble. Matthews' sack total was the second highest of his career, ranking fifth in the NFL and second in the NFC, despite missing a month of action due to injury. The 2012 season also marked his third double-digit sack campaign, placing him third all-time in team history behind defensive ends Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and Reggie White (four). Matthews also started both playoff games in 2012 and added three sacks, bringing his career playoff total to 7½, trailing only White for the most in franchise postseason history.
Tickets for the banquet, which begins with the doors opening at 4:30 p.m. with a cash bar, and dinner and program to follow at 7 p.m., are $135 each. Originally established in 1967 as a temporary display in the concourse of the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena, the Hall moved into its own facility in 1976 near Lambeau Field. In 2003, it was relocated to a spectacular new, 25,000-square foot facility in the Lambeau Field Atrium.
