The Green Bay Packers have signed C/G Cecil Newton to the practice squad. The transaction was announced Thursday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

Newton, a 6-foot-2, 315-pound first-year player out of Tennessee State, signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a non-drafted free agent in May 2009. He spent the first 14 games of the '09 season on Jacksonville's practice squad before being signed to the active roster for the final two contests (inactive for both). Newton was also with the Jaguars during the 2010 preseason and the New Orleans Saints in the 2011 preseason. He was a two-time first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference selection at Tennessee State.

Newton will wear No. 64.
