The Green Bay Packers Wednesday signed non-drafted free agent defensive end Ja'Dae McGuire and released wide receiver Chris Shreve, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.
McGuire, whose first name is pronounced ja-DAY, played football and basketball at West Virginia Tech, a Division II school in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In 11 games last year, the 6-foot-5, 245-pound lineman posted 84 tackles (50 solo), nine sacks and led the conference with 22 tackles for loss.
The WVIAC Defensive Player of the Year, his best effort came in a 62-35 victory at West Liberty State, Oct. 18. McGuire posted eight tackles (seven solo), four tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception that he returned 36 yards for a touchdown. On the basketball court, McGuire averaged 8.9 points and 7.4 rebounds during his last season, 2002-03.
McGuire participated on a tryout basis in the team's post-draft mini-camp. Green Bay has now signed three tryout players from the camp, including linebacker Jermaine Taylor (May 3) and cornerback Chris Day (Thursday).
On Green Bay's roster, McGuire will wear No. 72.
Shreve, a non-drafted free agent from Virginia Tech who joined the club May 1, also participated in the post-draft mini-camp.
