GREEN BAY – Week 16 is upon us, and the Packers have the simplest playoff-clinching scenario they could ask for.
Win and in.
A victory over New Orleans on Monday night at Lambeau Field would give Green Bay (10-4) its 11th victory and lock up a spot in the NFC postseason field.
There is the possibility the Packers could clinch a playoff spot before Monday night, though.
That scenario requires the Falcons (7-7) to lose (or tie) and also for either the Rams or Seahawks, both 8-6, to lose (or tie).
So to see the Packers clinch before having to play this week, it'll take some upsets, by all means root for the New York Giants (2-12) to beat Atlanta and for the N.Y. Jets (4-10) to defeat the Rams.
It might be prudent to think twice about cheering against the Seahawks, though, because they play the Vikings (12-2), who are currently ahead of the Packers in the NFC pecking order, and Green Bay still has a chance to overtake Minnesota over these last three weeks of the regular season.
So, all things considered, the best move is to pull for Seattle to knock off Minnesota to give the Packers a chance to catch the Vikings when they square off next week.
The Commanders (9-5) are right on Green Bay's heels in the wild-card chase and facing the NFC East-leading Eagles (12-2), so it would also help the Packers' potential playoff seed to cheer for Philadelphia to beat Washington.
Some might be wondering about the Lions-Bears game, and while it's not likely to have much impact on the Packers' situation due to the Lions' advantage in tiebreaker scenarios, there's no harm in hoping Chicago can upset Detroit.
Another team that could potentially enter Green Bay's picture, though, particularly if the Falcons win, is the Buccaneers (8-6). It may not matter in the end, but might as well root for Dallas (6-8) to defeat Tampa Bay.
Then we'll see where everything stands next week.
