Wednesday, at the NFL meetings in Philadelphia, team officials decided against expanding the playoff format from 12 to 14 teams.
They did so without bringing it up for a vote, confident that the proposal would fall short of the 24 votes (three-quarters) required for approval.
The issue was first brought up for consideration at the NFL meetings in Phoenix in March, but the issue was tabled for further discussion.
It is unclear when playoff expansion might next be discussed.
If the playoffs were expanded, the NFC and AFC teams with the best record would receive a first-round bye and six playoff games would be held on the first weekend of the postseason.
