GREEN BAY - Aaron Rodgers' chemistry and connection with Randall Cobb were on full display during the Packers' opening day of training camp on Thursday.
The two-time MVP quarterback wasted no time finding his veteran receiver on the very first pass attempt of the initial team period at Nitschke Field, targeting Cobb against second-year cornerback Kevin King.
Both players made a play on the ball, leading to some debate between the offense and defense whether it was a completed catch or interception. Regardless of the perspective, the competitive rep helped set the tempo for practice and reflected the importance of having Cobb on the field after some initial questions earlier this month about his availability at the start of camp.
"Randall, just his professionalism and commitment," said Head Coach Mike McCarthy during his pre-practice news conference on Friday morning. "Everybody has the opportunity to get out of here, but the commitment of Randall Cobb and Bryan Bulaga to be here every day (this offseason) - (Cobb) looks great. The first play whether it's unit drill outside or even the competitive periods, where the ball goes deep to Randall, it tells you his health status."
The offseason departure of veteran Jordy Nelson has thrust Cobb and Davante Adams into an even greater leadership position within a receivers room with three rookie draft picks in the midst of their first NFL training camp.
So far, it's a responsibility neither receiver has shied away from.
"Davante and you see Randall and obviously David (Raih) and Jim Hostler are coaching, but the conversation behind and in between plays is critical," McCarthy said. "Those are teaching moments and I think Davante and Randall, you could see in the spring, too. And then they had a lot of change for themselves as far as what we're doing. We've changed things schematically this year, particularly in that room, and obviously they have a new coach, a new pass-game coordinator. But I think those guys are excellent leaders, particularly from the veteran responsibility that they hold and take very seriously."
The Packers return to the practice field Friday at 11:30 a.m. CT.
