GREEN BAY—With wide receiver Jared Abbrederis about to launch his pro career, here's a look at the Packers' best players from the University of Wisconsin. Abbrederis is the 38th Badger drafted by the Packers, second most from any school, but the first since guard Bill Ferrario in 2001 and only the fifth in the last 29 years.
1. Charles "Buckets" Goldenberg, G-B, 1933-'45 – Played 13 seasons, a total surpassed by only five players in Packers history. Goldenberg was named one of two guards on the first two all-time Packers teams chosen in 1946 and 1957, and also named one of the guards on the Packers' 11-man All-Iron Man Team selected in 1976. He served as a blocking back for most of his first three seasons, then moved to guard. He played on three NFL championship teams.
2. Howard "Cub" Buck, T, 1921-'25 – First big-name player signed by the Packers. Buck was named one of two tackles on all-time Packers teams chosen in 1946 and '57.
3. Milt Gantenbein, E, 1931-'40 – Named an end on Packers All-Iron Man team chosen in 1976, Gantenbein was also named first-team all-pro over fellow end Don Hutson on two of four all-pro teams chosen in 1936, and was selected to at least one second team in each of the 1937 and '38 seasons. He played on three NFL championship teams and served as Packers captain on the 1936 and '39 champs. He excelled on defense, but was also a solid receiver on offense.
4. Ken Bowman, C, 1964-'73 – Took over as starting center during his rookie year and held the job for most of his career. He was unsung but a solid starter on Packers' 1965 and '67 NFL championship teams. A shoulder injury knocked him out for most of the '66 season, but he came off the bench in the second quarter and played despite his injury in Super Bowl I. Started Super Bowl II.
5. Mark Tauscher, T, 2000-'10 – Highly reliable right tackle that started 132 of the 134 games he played in over 11 seasons. He suffered a knee injury in 2002 and another late in 2008 that limited his playing time in his final two seasons. Otherwise, Tauscher answered the bell game after game, and that alone is high praise.
