Training Camp Report - August 24

The Packers continued their training camp journey Tuesday with two full squad workouts. Approximately 1,200 fans lined the Clarke Hinkle fence during the morning session.

Defense may have ruled the day in Monday's practice, but the offense and defense each had their share of bright spots Tuesday morning.

In 11-on-11 drills, Brett Favre and Robert Ferguson entertained the crowds with two spectacular plays. On the first play, Favre unleashed a 50-yard pass to Ferguson for a touchdown, and later the pair hooked up for a 40-yard completion.

Quarterback Tim Couch also got in on the action when he found Reggie Love for a 40-yard strike down the middle of the field. In the afternoon, Couch threw a perfect pass to Donald Driver from about 40 yards away and the receiver walked in for the score to complete a 70-yard touchdown.

In 1-on-1 drills, Scott Wells continued his quest for a roster spot. The rookie center out of Tennessee pancaked defensive tackle Ken Kocher on his first attempt. With defensive line coach Jethro Franklin urging him on, Kocher again got back in line to face Wells. Wells wouldn't budge, though. For the second consecutive time, Wells kept Kocher from getting near the "dummy quarterback."

Linebackers Steve Josue and Hannibal Navies also worked with the defensive line in the 1-on-1 drills during practice.

Chad Clifton sat out Tuesday's practices due to bursitis in his left knee, but the offensive line did get a boost from the return of Mike Wahle, who had been on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list since the beginning of training camp with a knee contusion.

Wahle immediately jumped into his starting left guard spot and earned the approval of GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman.

"He seemed like he was in the groove pretty good today," Sherman said. "I thought he had a good practice. I worked him out yesterday inside, and fundamentally and strength- wise he looked excellent. I thought he demonstrated that out here today as well."

Rookie Steve Morley, who had been filling in while Wahle was injured, moved over to left tackle to fill in for Clifton. Sherman indicated that Clifton would most likely be out a couple days, but should play Friday at Jacksonville.

Near the conclusion of practice, the defense turned up the heat with two turnovers. The first one came when safety Mark Roman picked off a Craig Nall pass that was intended for fullback Kris Briggs. The ball first hit Briggs in the hands before bouncing off his shoulder pads. An alert Roman grabbed the interception and had a minimal return.

Just as the offense finished Monday's morning session with a big play, the defense returned the favor, Tuesday. On a fly pattern down the sideline, defensive back Jason Horton turned into the receiver and made an over the shoulder grab for an interception off Scott McBrien. It was arguably the play of the day and a fitting way for the defense to conclude practice.

The afternoon session featured interceptions by Bhawoh Jue and Michael Hawthorne. Rookie Ahmad Carroll also broke up a long pass to wide receiver Javon Walker, which drew the fans' approval.

Josue, defensive lineman Corey Williams and defensive end Seante Williams worked on their pass rushing skills with Franklin and assistant defensive line coach Brad Miller after the morning session. Also staying after practice to catch balls from the JUGS machine were cornerback Chris Day and Ferguson.

The afternoon practice ended 10 minutes early due to a downpour of heavy rain.

The Packers will return to Clarke Hinkle Field Wednesday afternoon for one practice at 1:00 p.m. The first 30 minutes of the practice will be for the special teams with a full-squad workout to follow.
