Entering his fifth season coaching in the NFL, Anthony Campanile begins his first year with the Packers in 2024 as the team's linebackers coach/running game coordinator. Named to his position on Feb. 6, 2024, by Head Coach Matt LaFleur, Campanile (camp-uh-nell-ee) comes to Green Bay after spending the past four seasons as linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins.
During his time with the Dolphins, Campanile was a part of staffs that helped Miami rank No. 4 in the NFL over that span in sacks (185), No. 6 in rushing defense (106.4 ypg), No. 8 in takeaways (96) and third-down defense (38.6 pct.) and tied for No. 5 in forced fumbles (56).
In 2023, the Dolphins ranked No. 3 in the league with a single-season franchise-record 56 sacks and were led by LB Bradley Chubb's 11 sacks. Chubb also tied for the NFL lead with a career-high six forced fumbles, becoming the first Dolphin to register 10-plus sacks and six-plus forced fumbles in a season since LB Jason Taylor in 2006, and added career bests for tackles (73) and QB hits (22). Campanile also tutored LB Jaelan Phillips, who was limited to just eight games due to injuries but registered 6½ sacks and 11 QB hits as he became the first player in franchise history to register six-plus sacks in each of his first three NFL seasons. In his first season with the team in 2023, LB David Long Jr. led the Dolphins with a career-high 110 tackles (62 solo). Miami ranked No. 7 in the league in '23 in rushing defense (97.1 ypg), the team's fewest rushing yards allowed per game since 2011 (95.6 ypg), and No. 6 in yards allowed per carry (3.81). The Dolphins tied for the league lead by allowing just 32 runs of 10-plus yards on the season, their fewest given up in a season dating back to 2000.
Campanile's unit helped the Dolphins rank No. 4 in the NFL in rushing defense (103.0 ypg) in 2022, the team's top finish since a No. 3 ranking in 2011. Phillips led the team in both sacks (seven) and QB hits (25) while LB Elandon Roberts paced the team with a career-high 104 tackles (65 solo) and added 10 tackles for a loss (No. 2 on the team).
In 2021, Campanile worked with a linebacker group that helped the Dolphins rank tied for No. 5 in the league with 48 sacks, tied for the fourth most in a season in team history. The LBs accounted for 19½ of those sacks, with Phillips setting a team rookie record with 8½ sacks. Miami was tied for No. 8 in the NFL in takeaways with 26, including 12 opponent fumbles recovered, tied for No. 4 in the league.
In his first NFL season in 2020, Campanile was part of a staff that guided Miami to No. 1 league rankings in takeaways (29) and third-down defense (31.2 pct.) as the Dolphins won 10 games for the first time since 2016. For the first time in franchise history, the Dolphins had three linebackers register five-plus sacks in a season (Jerome Baker, seven; Kyle Van Noy, six; Andrew Van Ginkel, 5½). Miami finished No. 6 in the NFL in scoring defense (21.1 ppg) after ranking last in the league in the category in 2019 (30.9 ppg).
In 2019, Campanile served as the linebackers coach at the University of Michigan, where he helped mentor Khaleke Hudson and Josh Uche, both of whom earned second-team All-Big Ten recognition for the first time in their careers. Hudson led the team with 101 tackles (45 solo), good for No. 5 in the Big Ten, and was selected by Washington in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Uche ranked No. 9 in the Big Ten with a team-high 8½ sacks and was picked by New England in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Wolverines ranked in the top 25 in the nation in 2019 in total defense (No. 11, 307.2 ypg), rushing defense (No. 22, 121.7 ypg) and scoring defense (No. 25, 20.7 ppg).
Campanile spent the previous three seasons at Boston College (2016-18), where he coached defensive backs all three years and added co-defensive coordinator duties for his final season. He helped six of his defensive backs earn All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors with four of them going on to be selected in the NFL Draft (S John Johnson III, CB Kamrin Moore, CB Isaac Yiadom, S Will Harris).
In 2018, Campanile helped the Eagles finish tied for No. 5 in the nation with 18 INTs and tied for No. 11 with 26 takeaways. DB Hamp Cheevers earned first-team All-ACC recognition and third-team All-America honors after tying for the FBS lead with seven INTs on the season.
Campanile's defensive backs helped the Eagles to a No. 3 national ranking in pass-efficiency defense (101.84) in 2017 as they tied for No. 12 in the nation with 18 INTs. DB Lukas Denis was tied for No. 2 in the country with seven INTs on his way to earning second-team All-America recognition and second-team All-ACC honors. Campanile was named the National Defensive Backs Coach of the Year by both 247Sports and FootballScoop.com for his efforts in 2017. In his first season at BC in 2016, Campanile helped the Eagles rank No. 9 in the country in total defense (314.2 ypg) and No. 7 in rushing defense (108.5 ypg).
Prior to his time at BC, Campanile spent the previous four seasons at Rutgers, serving as a defensive assistant in 2012 before moving to the offensive side of the ball to coach tight ends (2013-14) and wide receivers (2015). In 2015, he tutored WR Leonte Carroo, who led the Big Ten and was tied for No. 14 in the nation with 10 receiving TDs. Carroo earned third-team All-Big Ten honors and was selected by the Dolphins in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. During his time coaching tight ends for the Scarlet Knights, Campanile helped develop Tyler Kroft, who earned first-team All-American Athletic Conference recognition and All-America honorable mention from SI.com in 2013. Kroft went on to be picked by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
Campanile coached for six seasons (2006-11) at the high-school level, beginning as an assistant at his alma mater, Fair Lawn (N.J.) High School, in 2006. He then coached for five seasons at Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.), tutoring linebackers (2007-09) before serving as offensive coordinator (2010-11). Campanile helped guide the Ironmen to state titles in both 2010 and 2011 and a No. 1 national ranking in 2011.
Campanile began his coaching career as a student assistant at Rutgers in 2005 after playing safety and linebacker at Rutgers from 2002-04. Campanile was born Aug. 18, 1982, in Fair Lawn, N.J. He and his wife, Tracey, have two daughters, Valentina and Serafina, and a son, Anthony.
