Hired Feb. 28, 2024, Anthony Perkins begins his first season as a defensive quality control coach for the Packers. Perkins comes to Green Bay after spending the past two seasons as the cornerbacks coach at Oregon State.
Perkins was part of a staff in 2023 that helped the Beavers to an 8-5 record and an appearance in the Sun Bowl. Oregon State ranked No. 21 in the nation and No. 4 in the Pacific-12 in rushing defense (114.2 ypg). The Beavers also checked in at No. 4 in the Pac-12 in total defense (350.1 ypg) and passing defense (235.8 ypg) and tied for No. 3 with 12 interceptions. Perkins' cornerback group contributed to the Beavers' 63 passes defensed on the season, which was tied for No. 27 in the nation.
In Perkins' first season at Oregon State in 2022, he was part of a staff that helped the Beavers finish with a 10-3 record, the school's first 10-win campaign since 2006, a 10-3 season that was capped off with a 30-3 victory over Florida in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl. Oregon State led the Pac-12 and ranked in the top 25 in the nation in scoring defense (No. 16, 20.0 ppg), total defense (No. 24, 332.8 ypg) and rushing defense (No. 14, 108.2 ypg). The Beavers led the Pac-12, ranked tied for No. 13 in the nation with 71 passes defensed and were led by CB Ryan Cooper Jr., who ranked No. 2 in the conference with 13 passes defensed. Oregon State allowed nearly 20 fewer yards through the air in 2022 (224.5 ypg) than they did in 2021 (243.5 ypg).
Perkins spent three seasons as cornerbacks coach at Colorado State (2019-21), where he helped guide the Rams to one of their biggest defensive turnarounds in school history in 2019. CSU ranked No. 7 in the nation in passing defense (181.6 ypg) in '19, an improvement of more than 50 yards per game from 2018 (No. 68, 232.0 ypg). The No. 7 national ranking was the Rams' best in at least 30 years as they led the Mountain West Conference in the category for the first time since 2005. In 2020, Perkins tutored CB Marshaun Cameron on his way to earning first-team All-MWC honors from Pro Football Focus.
Perkins' first full-time NFL experience came with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he served as the assistant to the head coach in 2017-18. He also spent time with the Buccaneers in the spring of 2016 as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. He spent the 2015-16 seasons as cornerbacks coach at Ohio University and also spent time with the Tennessee Titans in 2015 as part of the Bill Walsh program. Perkins served as the secondary coach at Indiana State in 2013-14 and began his coaching career at Colorado, his alma mater, as a technical intern for the Buffaloes in 2012.
Perkins played safety at Colorado (2008-11), appearing in 38 games with 27 starts for the Buffaloes and recording 236 tackles (140 solo), three INTs, six passes defensed, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. As a senior in 2011, he was tied for No. 2 on the team with 80 tackles (49 solo) despite missing four games due to injury. Perkins signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in July 2012 and appeared in three contests that preseason.
Perkins was born on Jan. 18, 1989, in Leonardtown, Md. He and his wife, Janessa, have a daughter, Imani, and a son, Trae. His grandfather, Don Perkins, played running back for the Dallas Cowboys for eight seasons (1961-68), where he was selected to six Pro Bowls, earned All-Pro recognition four times and was inducted into the team's Ring of Honor.
