Dick Hasseler of NEW Lutheran High School has been named Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week, a program presented by the Wisconsin National Guard, the organization announced Wednesday.
NEW Lutheran has started the season 3-0 after defeating Oneida Nation this past Friday in convincing fashion, 70-22. Friday's victory puts the Blazers atop the WIAA sanctioned Great Eight conference comprised of ten 8-man high school football teams. The Blazers will look to extend their winning streak this Saturday, when they host the 2-1 Three Lakes Bluejays.
"With 18 kids in our program, including four seniors, we have a great group of kids who play hard and with a ton of emotion," Hasseler said. "The key to our program is that everybody has each other's back and everybody holds each other accountable."
A Green Bay, Wis., native, Hasseler is a 1980 graduate of De Pere High School where he played on both the offensive and defensive lines. Hasseler began his coaching career in 1984 at De Pere Middle School. After a brief hiatus from coaching, Hasseler spent five years coaching the Allouez Buccaneers youth program before accepting a position on the Green Bay Southwest High School junior varsity coaching staff in 2002. After returning to the Buccaneers for two seasons, Hasseler accepted the position of head coach at NEW Lutheran High School in 2009. Hasseler is also the school's facility manager.
His assistant coaching staff includes assistants Bill Gosse, Levi Kooistra, Doug Lloyd and Davis Manci.
Hasseler and his wife, Melinda, have three children, Jacob, Matthew and Seth.
The Packers and the Wisconsin National Guard will recognize one outstanding high school coach as their 'Coach of the Week' winner during the 2012 high school football season. A Brown County Program has been honored with the award for each of the last 14 years. Winners are awarded several items and privileges, including a $2,000 donation to the school's football program from the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin National Guard and the NFL, as well as recognition of the award on Packers.com.
