The Green Bay Packers signed TE Austin Allen and K Matt Ammendola to the practice squad. The transactions were announced Tuesday by General Manager Brian Gutekunst.
Allen (6-8, 253), a first-year player, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Nebraska by the New York Giants on May 13, 2022. After being released at the end of August, he spent the first six weeks of last season on the Giants' practice squad. Allen played in 44 games with 24 starts in college, registering 65 receptions for 975 yards (15.0 avg.) and three touchdowns. In 2021, he started all 12 games and recorded 38 catches for 602 yards (15.8 avg.), both single-season records for a Nebraska tight end. Allen was voted first-team All-Big Ten by the media, earned second-team honors from the league's coaches and was named Big Ten Tight End of the Year in 2021. He will wear No. 49 for the Packers.
(am-men-DOLE-uh) Ammendola (5-10, 189), a second-year player, was originally signed on March 24, 2021, by the Carolina Panthers out of Oklahoma State. He was released on May 17, 2021, by Carolina and signed with the New York Jets on July 31, 2021. He played in 11 games for the Jets in 2021, making 13 of 19 field goals (68.4 pct.) and 14 of 15 extra points (93.3 pct.) while kicking off 43 times and posting 27 touchbacks. He was released by the Jets in the offseason and had a brief stint in training camp with the Houston Texans. This season, Ammendola spent part of September on the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad, kicking in two contests as a gameday elevation. He was on the Arizona Cardinals' practice squad and active roster in October and played in two games. Overall this season, Ammendola has gone 5 of 7 (71.4 pct.) on both field goals and extra points while recording touchbacks on 12 of 16 kickoffs. He will wear No. 8 for the Packers.
