Long TD drive in first quarter was both efficient and explosive

No third downs needed on nine-play, 96-yard march for game’s first points

GREEN BAY – Backed up to their own 4-yard line in the first quarter of a scoreless game, the Packers just needed to get out of the hole.

They did a lot more than that, which is why the nine-play, 96-yard touchdown drive for the first points of Sunday's 24-19 victory in Los Angeles is the Chevy Drive of the Week.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the drive is the Packers never even needed a third-down conversion. A 7-yard pass to WR Malik Heath followed by a 4-yard run by Josh Jacobs picked up the initial first down. Then a 4-yard pass to WR Jayden Reed and a 7-yard run by Jacobs got the next one.

Reed's 8-yard end around and Jacobs' 11-yard run up the middle moved the chains again, out to the Green Bay 45-yard line. Then came the big blow. On second-and-10, QB Jordan Love fired deep to Reed as he headed toward the front pylon of the end zone. The high-arcing pass came down between three Rams defenders and into Reed's arms for a spectacular diving catch at the 2-yard line for a 53-yard gain.

On the next snap, Jacobs bounced a run outside and won the race to the goal line, scoring his first touchdown as a member of the Packers. Green Bay had a 7-0 lead and for the first time in 45 years had produced TD drives of 95-plus yards in consecutive games, on the heels of last week's 96-yard scoring drive against the Vikings.
